Gambling dapps

A gambling dapp settles bets on a blockchain you can audit. Almost nothing marketed as a dapp casino actually does that, and the difference decides who holds your money.

What a gambling dapp actually is

A decentralised application runs its logic in a smart contract on a public chain. For gambling that means the bet, the random number and the payout are transactions anyone can inspect, and the contract pays out whether or not the operator wants it to. You keep custody until the moment you bet, you connect a wallet instead of opening an account, and there is no cashier that can freeze a balance.

That is the strict definition. It is also rare. The sites that dominate crypto gambling by volume are not this.

What most crypto casinos are instead

Take a site like Stake or Roobet. You deposit crypto to an address the operator controls, your balance becomes a number in their database, you play games that run on their servers, and you ask them to send the money back. The chain is the payment rail. Nothing about the game is on it.

That is a custodial website that accepts crypto. It is not a dapp, and calling it one is marketing rather than description. We say so plainly because the distinction is the whole risk picture: if the balance sits with the operator, then withdrawal policy, solvency and goodwill are what you are relying on.

Provably fair is not the same as on chain

Most crypto casinos answer the fairness question with a provably fair system: a server seed is hashed and published before you play, your client seed is mixed in, and afterwards the server seed is revealed so you can check that the result was fixed before you bet. It is real cryptography and it does work for what it claims.

What it does not do is move custody. A provably fair game proves the dice were not loaded. It proves nothing about whether you can get your money out. Those are separate questions and operators benefit from them being blurred. How we check published RTP

How to tell which one you are looking at

  • Do you connect a wallet, or create an account? A wallet connection with no email is the signature of an actual dapp. A signup form is the signature of a custodial site.
  • Where does the balance live? If you can see your funds in your own wallet between bets, it is on chain. If the site shows a balance you have to withdraw, it is custodial.
  • Is there a contract address? A real dapp publishes one and you can read its transactions. If nobody can point you to a contract, there is not one.
  • Who can freeze you? A contract cannot close your account. An operator can, and the terms usually say so.

Why the custodial sites still take the volume

On chain settlement is slow and expensive compared to a database write, and it caps what a casino can offer: no instant thousand bet per minute Originals, no credit, no bonus engine. The sites at the top of our volume ranking are custodial precisely because custody is what makes the product fast. That is a real trade and it is worth understanding before you pick a side of it.

The practical position for most players is not to hunt for a pure dapp. It is to treat every custodial site as temporary storage: keep the balance small, withdraw often, and judge operators on whether the money actually comes back. What withdrawal behaviour tells you

Where the chain still helps you

Even on a custodial site, the deposit and withdrawal legs are on a public chain, and that is the part nobody can quietly edit. It is why we rank operators on tracked deposit volume rather than on bonus size: the money moving in is observable, so it is the one number an operator cannot inflate with a press release.
