Hardware wallets

What it does

Keys are generated and stored on a dedicated device and never touch your computer. Transactions are signed on the device and confirmed on its own screen, so malware on your machine cannot sign transactions or extract the key.

What it does not do

• It does not protect a casino balance. Once funds are deposited they are the operator's to manage.
• It does not protect against approving a bad transaction. If you confirm on the device, it executes.
• It does not make you anonymous. Addresses remain public and permanent.
• It does not help if you lose the seed phrase, which is the actual backup rather than the device.

Whether you need one

Roughly: if the amount you hold outside casinos is large enough that losing it would genuinely hurt, yes. Below that, a well maintained software wallet on a clean device is reasonable.

For casino players specifically the useful pattern is two tiers. Hardware for the reserve, software for the working balance you move in and out of operators. Most of your risk is in the second tier, and most of your money should not be.

Practical points

• Buy directly from the manufacturer. Never secondhand, never from a marketplace listing.
• Generate the seed on the device yourself. A device arriving with a pre filled seed card is compromised.
• Verify the receiving address on the device screen, not on your computer. That is the entire point of the screen.
• Test with a small amount before moving anything substantial.

The failure mode people actually hit

Not device compromise. Seed phrase loss, and phishing. Someone contacts you claiming to be support, and the conversation ends with you entering twelve or twenty four words into a website.

No legitimate party ever needs your seed phrase. There is no exception to this and no circumstance where it becomes reasonable.
