The variable nobody mentions

Crypto gambling and tax

In several European countries whether you owe tax on winnings depends on where the casino is licensed, not on how much you won.

This is the least discussed and potentially most expensive subject on this site, and it turns on a single fact: whether an operator is licensed inside the European Economic Area.

Every operator in our ranking is licensed outside the EEA. Curacao and Anjouan are both outside it. For players in some European countries that has direct and significant tax consequences.

Why licence jurisdiction matters

Several European countries exempt gambling winnings from tax where the operator is licensed within the EEA, on the basis that the operator has already been taxed there. Winnings from operators outside the EEA fall outside that exemption and are treated as taxable income.

The crucial and frequently missed second half: in some of these countries gambling losses are not deductible against those winnings. That combination can produce a tax bill on a losing year.

Country guides

Finland

The clearest and harshest case, including a 2025 Supreme Administrative Court ruling that should be read by every Finnish player using these sites.

Sweden

EEA licensed winnings tax free, non EEA winnings treated as capital income.

Germany

A different structure again, with the tax applied to the operator rather than the player.

Crypto adds a second layer

In many jurisdictions, disposing of cryptocurrency is itself a taxable event separate from any gambling treatment. Converting Bitcoin to a stablecoin to deposit, or converting a withdrawal back to fiat, can create a capital gains position independent of whether the gambling itself is taxed.

Two separate questions, two separate sets of rules, and they interact differently in every country.

Keep records

Whatever your situation, keep them. Deposits, withdrawals, dates, amounts, the fiat value at the time, and which operator. Reconstructing years of crypto casino activity after the fact is genuinely difficult, and the chain records the transfers without recording what they were for.

General information only, not tax advice. We are not accountants and this is not a substitute for one. Rules change, individual circumstances differ enormously, and the only authoritative source is your national tax authority. Verify anything here before you rely on it.

Gambling carries a negative expected return. Over enough bets the house edge wins by design, and no ranking on this site changes that. If it has stopped being a choice, free confidential help exists: Peluuri in Finland, Stödlinjen in Sweden, BZgA in Germany, and GamCare internationally.
